1.1 This Standard covers the electrical and mechanical characteristics of (a) round 1 350 aluminum wires used before compacting in the construction of conductors; and (b) bare compact round aluminum stranded conductors (compact round ASC) constructed from the wires specified in Item (a). 1.2 The following classifications apply to those conductors covered by this Standard: (a) Class AA: for bare conductors used in overhead lines. (b) Class A: (i) for bare conductors where greater flexibility than is afforded by Class AA is required; or (ii) for conductors to be covered with weather-resistant (weather-proof) materials or materials such as thermoplastics, thermosets, pagers, etc. (c) Class B: (i) for the conductors specified in Item (b) where greater flexibility than is afforded by Class A is required; or (ii) for conductors to be covered with materials such as thermoplastics, thermosets, paper, etc. 1.3 In CSA Standards, “shall” is used to express a requirement, i.e., a provision that the user is obliged to satisfy in order to comply with the standard; “should” is used to express a recommendation or that which is advised but not required; “may” is used to express an option or that which is permissible within the limits of the standard. Notes accompanying clauses do not include requirements or alternative requirements; the purpose of a note accompanying a clause is to separate from the text explanatory or informative material. Notes to tables and figures are considered part of the table or figure and may be written as requirements. Annexes are designated normative (mandatory) or informative (non-mandatory) to define their application.
3 Definitions In addition to the definitions in CAN/CSA-C61 089, the following definitions shall apply in this Standard: Annealed (“0”) temper — a metallurgical condition obtained by heat treating a metal in order to remove the effects of cold work. Cold work — a mechanical process that increases the tensile strength of a metal while reducing its ductility and conductivity. Compact round ASC — a conductor consisting of a central single aluminum wire that is (a) surrounded by one or more layers of round aluminum wires; and (b) compacted into an overall final round shape by drawing, rolling, or other means. Equivalent diameter — the diameter of a round wire that has the same cross-sectional area as a given formed wire of the same material. Formed wire — a filament of drawn or rolled metal having a constant non-circular cross-section. Hard temper — the highest metallurgical condition that can be achieved by cold working a metal. Intermediate temper — any metallurgical condition that is between annealed and hard temper. 4 Construction 4.1 General The construction (i.e., the number of wires, cross-sectional area, and diameter) of the completed compact round ASC shall be as specified in Tables 1 and 2. The lay of the completed compact round ASC shall be in accordance with Clause 4.3.2. The conductor temper shall be hard (H1 9) or intermediate temper. 4.2 Material The aluminum wires employed in Classes AA and A conductors shall be of hard temper. For Class B conductors, the wires shall be of the temper specified by the purchaser. All wires in a conductor shall be of the same temper. Before stranding and compacting, aluminum wires shall comply with the following CSA Standards, as applicable: (a) CAN/CSA-C60889, for aluminum 1 350 (A1 ) of hard temper; and (b) CSA C49.3, for aluminum 1 350 of intermediate tempers. 4.3 Completed conductor 4.3.1 Surface The surface of the completed conductor shall be free from all imperfections not consistent with good manufacturing practice.
4.3.2 Lay 4.3.2.1 Classes AA and A The conductor lay length of Classes AA and A conductors shall be in accordance with Clause 5.4 of CAN/CSA-C61 089. The direction of lay of the outer layer of Classes AA and A conductors shall be right-hand and it shall be reversed in successive layers. 4.3.2.2 Class B The direction of lay of the outer layer of Class B conductors shall be left-hand. Other layers may be reversed or unidirectional in successive layers. The lay length of the outer layer shall be 8 to 1 6 times the outside diameter of the compacted conductor, except that for sizes No. 2 AWG and smaller, the maximum length of lay shall be 1 7.5 times the outside diameter of the completed conductor. 4.4 Joints 4.4.1 Joints and splices shall not be made in completed compact round ASC.CSA C49.5-10 pdf download.
