3 Definitions The following definitions shall apply in this Standard: Air compressor — a device that pressurizes the working medium (air) for storage in a pressure vessel. Diesel engine — a compression-ignition, internal combustion engine that utilizes a low-volatile hydrocarbon (diesel). Diesel particulate matter (DPM) — material collected on a specified filter medium after diluting exhaust gases with clean, filtered air to a temperature of greater than 42 °C and less than or equal to 52 °C, as measured at a point immediately upstream of the primary filter. Exhaust treatment device — a device designed to remove or reduce the concentrations of one or more of the constituents defined in the exhaust quality index (EQI) equation. Explosion-proof enclosure (flameproof enclosure) — an enclosure that is capable of withstanding, without damage, a methane/air explosion that might occur within it; and is capable of preventing ignition of methane surrounding the enclosure that might be caused by sparks or flames from the explosion of methane within the enclosure. Exhaust treatment device — a device designed to remove or reduce the concentrations of one or more of the constituents defined in the exhaust quality index (EQI) equation. Fire-resistant hydraulic fluid — a fluid which is fire-resistant to the extent defined for category 2 in CAN/CSA-M423. Flame arrester — a device for preventing passage of flame while permitting the flow of gas or vapour. Fuel alteration — modification of “normal” fuel to accomplish a reduction in emissions of one or more constituents in the exhaust, such as by emulsifying water into the fuel oil to reduce nitric oxide (NO) generation or adding additives to reduce soot ignition temperature in particulate traps. Hydraulic system — a system that consists of hydraulic fluid, a hydraulic power source, a reservoir, controls, actuators or motors, together with interconnecting conduits and accessories that are used to mechanize the function of a machine.
